Preview: England v Scotland

England take on Scotland in an international friendly at Wembley on Wednesday evening with Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney’s fitness dominating the build-up to the game.

The 27-year-old, who is a transfer target for Chelsea this summer, missed United’s 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic in the Community Shield on Sunday with his club claiming he is suffering with a shoulder injury.

Rooney, however, appeared to be in fine shape during England’s training session on Monday and Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson has said the frontman is in contention to start the game against the Auld Enemy.

Southampton forward Rickie Lambert could also start the game for England and in doing so would earn his first international cap.

The 31-year-old netted 15 times for the Saints last season and was handed his first England call-up by Hodgson last week after finishing last term as the Premier League’s top English marksman.

Elsewhere, Manchester United winger Wilfried Zaha has been promoted from the Under-21 side and could win his second cap should he feature in the clash against the Scots.

Meanwhile, Scotland manager Gordon Strachan is without captain Darren Fletcher as he continues his recovery from bowel surgery.

Celtic’s Scott Brown, Charlie Mulgrew and James Forrest are back in the squad along with veteran striker Kenny Miller, who now plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps.
